HAITI ANNIVERSARY

Kiki Joachin became a beacon of hope to the world when he was hauled alive from the wreckage of the Haitian earthquake after remaining trapped under rubble for a week.

The iconic rescue photo of the seven-year-old boy was beamed around the world.

But when I returned to Haiti five years on in January 2015, I found him hungry and living in a cramped shack with his mother, sister and brother. Heartbreakingly, the siblings were too poor to go to school.

Subsequently, my article raised awareness of his plight and Kiki and his siblings are now back in class.
